Is the Romagna Riviera extending its tourism season?
The emerging question
The Romagna Riviera, including Rimini, is a useful starting point for examining how an established Adriatic destination might strengthen tourism outside the traditional peak summer season.
In October 2025, Emilia-Romagna’s regional tourism observatory reported growth during the April–June shoulder season and highlighted sport, congresses, fairs, culture and food events as contributors to the wider tourism offer. Consolidated regional figures for 2025 subsequently confirmed overall growth. Annual growth, however, does not by itself establish that the seasonal pattern is changing.
Why it may matter
For Croatia, the question is whether the Italian experience offers useful lessons for coastal destinations seeking to extend the season, diversify visitor demand and reduce reliance on the peak summer months. Any relevance to Istria, Zadar or other Croatian destinations must be tested rather than assumed.
What needs to be established
- Whether shoulder-season growth is sustained across several years.
- Which international markets and visitor segments are driving the change.
- How much events and diversified tourism products contribute to overnight stays.
- Whether the findings have a demonstrable application to Croatian destinations.
Current assessment
This is an exploratory research Lead, not a confirmed tourism trend or a recommendation to replicate the Italian model. The next step is to reconcile the available datasets, test the seasonal pattern and assess whether a meaningful cross-Adriatic implication emerges.
